Music

Wayuu music focuses primarily on expressing the experiences of its people: it describes their world, both natural and social, and it tells of events both past and present. It conveys the Wayuu understanding of their environment and the animals in it, their concepts of love and death, their people’s history, morality and customs.

Jayeechi

The most important artistic expression of the Wayuu culture, it is defined as a ‘sung event’ and performed only by one person, the pütchipü’üi or ‘palabrero’—the word messenger.

Its lyrics refer to notable historical events and experiences of the Wayuu people, and include descriptions of people, nature, love stories, and social values. Jayeechi performances are important means of promoting social norms and good behaviour, and are vehicles for the education of children, who are thereby inducted to a good and peaceful life within the community. The pütchipü’üi is a wise musician who knows the history and laws of the Wayuu; his role in society is very important, as he is the central arbiter in the administration of justice, whose role is to resolve conflicts and mediate between the different clans.

La Música

La música Wayuu expresa principalmente las experiencias de su gente: describe su mundo natural y social, y cuenta eventos pasados y presentes. Transmite la forma de entender a la naturaleza y a los animales en él, así como sus concepciones sobre el amor y la muerte, también expresa su sistema de creencias, valores y la historia de su pueblo.

Sus letras hablan sobre eventos históricos del pueblo Wayuu y descripciones de personas, la naturaleza, historias de amor y valores sociales. Sus interpretaciones son importantes par apromover normas sociales y buen comportamiento, además de ser vehículos para educar a sus hijos, induciéndolos vivir una vida pacífica de la comunidad. Los pütchipü’ui son músicos sabios que saben la historia de los Wayuu; su rol en la sociedad es muy importante porque es el arbitro en la administración de la justicia, ya que su rol es resolver los conflitos y mediar entre los difernetes clanes.
