The Wayuu Peoples

The Wayuu people reside in the Guajira peninsula of South America, on both sides of the northwest border between Colombia and Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea. The region is subdivided into high, low and mid-Guajira. The climate is semi-arid and there are frequent droughts.

The Wayuu make up the largest indigenous population of Colombia, with 380,460 inhabitants. Nowadays they are mainly farmers, fishers, livestock breeders, weavers and miners of salt and coal. Their language is called Wayuunaiki.

Los Wayuu residen en la península de la Guajira en América del sur, a ambos lados de la frontera noroeste entre Colombia y Venezuela, sobre el mar Carie. La región se subdivide en Guajira alta, media y baja.

Conforma la mayor población indígena de Colombia, con 380,460 habitantes. Hoy en día se dedican principalmente a la agricultura, la pesca, la ganadería, al tejido, y a la minería de carbón y sal. Su idioma es el Wayuunaiki.

The KICHWA Peoples

The Kichwa or Quechua peoples are a large and diverse group of Andean (605,162 inhabitants) and Amazonian (12,282 inhabitants) populations, whose mother tongue is Kichwa or Quechua, in its different varieties. They mainly inhabit Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, although due to migration some settlements can be found in other Latin American countries.

They are descendants of the Inca Empire, the largest civilisation in pre-Columbian America. The Andean Kichwa are linked by a common language, a common territory, a common worldview in relation to the land and the universe, and by commercial ties that existed before the arrival of the Spaniards.

They have a complex and technologically advanced culture, characterised by its effective adaptations to the geographical and climatic conditions of the region. They are advanced farmers, high-altitude stockbreeders, artisans, potters, metallurgists, healers and weavers.

Los Kichwa o Quechua son un grupo grande y diverso de poblaciones indígenas andinas (605,162 habitantes) y amazónicas (12,282 habitantes), cuya lengua materna es el Kichwa o Quechua, en sus difernetes variaciones. Habitan principalmente en Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia, aunque debido a la migración se pueden encontrar algunos asentamientos en otros países latinoamericanos.

Son descendientes del Imperio Inca, la civilización más grande de la américa precolombina. Los kichwa andinos están unidos por un común lenguaje, territorio, cosmovisión, y por lazos comerciales que existían ates de la llegada de los españoles.

Tienen una compleja cultura y tecnológicamente avanzada, caracerizada por sus efectivas adaptaciones a las condicioes geográficas y climáticas de la región. Son principalmente agricultores, ganaderos de altura, metalúrgicos, artesanos, alfareros, curanderos y tejedores.
